Andalusia’s Science Week
On 4 November, the University of Granada will show students how biodegradable, bioprinted wound dressings could cut plastic waste from humanitarian aid.
As part of the the Science Week in Andalusia, our partner the University of Granada (UGR) will run an interactive talk and workshop for students in their last two years of high school.
The session will open with the challenge ANIPH aims to address. When a humanitarian crisis hits, medical supplies and equipment have to arrive quickly, but what happens to the tonnes of plastic waste they leave behind? To answer this question, the UGR team will present ANIPH’s biodegradable, bio-based alternatives to fossil-based plastics and introduce its own contribution: novel bioprinted, biodegradable wound dressings made from natural polymers and probiotic-functionalised bacterial cellulose. This biomaterial has antibacterial properties and offers a promising alternative to conventional antibiotics in wound care.
Students will be introduced to the UGR laboratories and watch a live 3D-printing demonstration, showing step by step how these biomaterials are made and why 3D printing helps.
Now in its 26th edition, the Science Week uses hands-on activities to present high-quality, sustainable and inclusive research, and to show how knowledge shapes the future of society.
