ANIPH and MAGICBIOMAT launch joint webinar series

The series started with a session dedicated to circular economy, biodegradable biomaterials and sustainable manufacturing of PHA-based plastics.

On 26 February 2026, the joint webinar series organised by ANIPH and MAGICBIOMAT kicked off with its the first session, titled Circular by Design: Sustainable Manufacturing of Next-Generation Bio-Based Materials.

Moderated by Cristina Blaya (CETEC), the event brought together 45 participants to explore practical biotechnological routes for PHA-based materials and to address key challenges around scalability and sustainability.

During the webinar, keynote speaker Kevin O’Connor (University College Dublin) examined the production and end-of-life management of biobased and biodegradable plastics, arguing that these materials belong firmly within the circular bioeconomy, despite being frequently perceived as outside it. Yuanyuan Chen (Technological University of the Shannon) presented a circular-by-design framework integrating sustainable feedstocks, advanced polymer engineering, and end-of-life recovery strategies to minimise carbon footprint and enable high-value recycling. Salvador García Chumillas (CETBIO) introduced ANIPH’s PHA value chain targeting wound dressings and water barrier packaging, featuring programmed biodegradation supported by an AI predictive tool and a digital traceability system.

The session closed with an active discussion, with participants’ contributions, questions, and perspectives touching on the core topics at the heart of our projects.

The next episode — AI Meets Biodegradation: Digital Tools for Smarter Bio-based Materials — is scheduled for end of April 2026. Stay tuned for registration details!
